15 Things Every New Homeowner Needs

So you’ve bought a new home—congratulations! Now it’s time to make sure you have a few essential items every homeowner needs, including the ones you may not think about until you suddenly need them. Sure, you probably already have basics like shower curtains, cutlery organizers, and a vacuum. But there are always a few “must-haves” that slip through the cracks. Here’s a helpful list of essentials that may not have made it onto your radar.

  1. Grill

Nothing beats freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs, or steaks. A grill instantly upgrades your outdoor space—and it’s incredibly useful when the power goes out. Dinner saved!

  1. Emergency Kit

Every household should have enough supplies to last at least three days. Include water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, a radio, rain gear, warm jackets, and blankets.

  1. Security System

If your budget allows, consider a monitored security system for added peace of mind. Even displaying the signage can deter potential intruders. If that’s not an option, add deadbolts, window latches, and motion-activated outdoor lighting.

  1. Hidden Spare Key

Everyone gets locked out sooner or later. Make a spare key and stow it securely—under an outdoor unit in a magnetic box, inside a gutter, or in a disguised hide-a-key item.

  1. Outdoor Garbage Cans

Not all communities provide trash and recycling bins. Check your neighborhood or HOA guidelines to make sure you’re prepared for pickup day.

  1. Lawn Equipment

If you’re moving from an apartment or condo, lawn maintenance tools may not be top of mind. Add a mower, rake, clippers, hoses, and a weed eater to your list—yards can become overgrown quickly!

  1. Essential Tool Box

Many first-time homeowners forget the basics: a hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, tape measure, stud finder, and utility knife. Starter tool kits are affordable and perfect for everyday fixes.

  1. Ladder

A ladder is one of the most-needed items in a home—yet one of the most commonly forgotten. Changing bulbs, cleaning, and decorating all become much easier with one on hand.

  1. Toilet Plungers

It’s not glamorous, but it’s necessary—every bathroom needs its own plunger. While you’re at it, grab toilet brushes with holders for each bath.

  1. Super Glue

A small tube of strong adhesive can repair countless items. Keep a couple on hand for quick fixes.

  1. Extension Cords & Surge Protectors

Outlets won’t always be conveniently placed. Stock up on indoor and outdoor extension cords, and plug valuable electronics into surge protectors for safety.

  1. Tarps

Tarps are perfect for covering outdoor equipment, protecting patio furniture, or shielding plants during cold snaps.

  1. Three Helpful Books

Every household benefits from: a reliable all-purpose cookbook, a home maintenance/repair guide, and a trusted cleaning and household-tips book.

  1. Doormats

Protect your flooring by placing a doormat at every entrance. This simple item makes a big difference in keeping dirt and debris outside.

  1. A Small Safe or Lockbox

Use a fireproof safe or lockbox to store essential documents, valuables, and sensitive items—all in one secure place.
