The Colors of The Year

Ernest Homes loves seeing your inner designer come to life as you decide on your home's finishing touches. From countertop finishes to types of flooring, cabinetry to hardware, you get to unleash your creativity and infuse your personal style throughout your home.

One of the best ways to do this is through the use of color. Nothing catches the eye quite like a unique color and no one knows this better than the paint companies. That is why every year, these companies forecast the “it” colors for the year ahead.

As expected, there are about as many colors as there are brands. For 2024, the current choices range from chameleonlike blues and greens to warm and playful neutrals. Let’s see what’s behind the trends.

The Psychology of Color

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt a certain way because of the color palette? Studies have shown that color can have an impact on human behavior and mood. It’s called color psychology. For example, if you want a calming feeling, use natural, earthy colors like light gray, beige, white, and light brown. If you want a warm, nurturing vibe, shades of pink help evoke that feeling.

The color trends for 2024 seem to be evoking a whole range of moods.

  • Benjamin Moore: Blue Nova | A cool and moody blue-purple

This shade has a sumptuous quality, intriguing yet reassuring. The saturated blue has the flexibility to be classic or modern, usable as a unique accent color or as a soothing wall color.

It would coordinate well with sunny yellow drapes, a dusky green carpet, or a warm burnt orange sofa or chair.

  • Sherwin-Williams: Upward | A subtle periwinkle

This tranquil, breezy hue exudes positive energy in a sunny room. It also conveys contentment in a darker setting. Straddling the line between grey and blue, this cool and calming color suggests a whole range of feelings. Crisp white bedding or upholstery would pop against Upward, while icy grey kitchen cabinets would give it a serene vibe.

  • Valspar: Renew Blue | A calming, ocean-blue

Described as being “inspired by fleeting elements like fog, mist, clouds,”, this color is simple and soothing. It can skew blue or green depending on the light, giving it versatility as a color for cabinets, door frames, entryways, or accent color. Go modern by coordinating with icy white countertops, or coastal with seafoam grey/green pillows. And smokey grey flooring would be stunning.

  • Dutch Boy: Ironside | A deep olive green

A natural evolution of sage green, with a moody twist. It’s a less scary way to try a darker palette than going with the black paint trend. Evoking nature when paired with other earth tones, it can also be very classic when coordinating with antique white, dusky blue, or warm beige. Ironside is perfect for trim, accent walls, architectural features, or even furniture.

  • Behr: Cracked Pepper | A muted hybrid of black and dark gray

The perfect, dark, moody shade, it will look more dark grey in brighter light, and soft black in lower light. As a wall color with white trim, it is striking. On kitchen cabinets, it will show off the veining or flecks in the countertops. In addition to other shades of grey, cinnamon reds, terracotta oranges, and green greys will look elegant and warm.

Another trend… wallpaper!

While saturated, moody colors are on-trend in 2024, wallpaper is coming back for accent walls. The array of patterns and styles that are available coordinate well with the colors of the year. Florals or botanicals, Chinoiserie or wood. grasscloth or leather… just imagine the mood you could create!
